The Foundation of Freedom is the Courage of Ordinary People

History  Bert '53  On Line

CCF 42nd Corps

Nov. 25 1950, at dusk, CCF 38th and 42d armies attacked the US 25th and 2d divsions and ROK 7th and 8th divisions. The vicious, unexpected, resolute attack splintered the ROK 7th and 8th Divisions causing both to collapse, exposing the right flank of the Eighth Army. On Nov. 26, facing encirclement, Eighth Army began to withdraw, starting the longest retreat in our History.

Infiltrating behind UN lines in the 2nd Campaign

CCF 42nd Corps
Second Phase Campaign

On Nov. 27, main forces of the 38th army threatened our 2d Division, after smashing the Turk brigade guarding the flank. Nov. 28, its 113th Division marched 45 miles in 14 hours cutting off the UN withdrawal route south to Sunchon. After occupying Nyunweng, the 42nd Corps crossed over mountain ranges to get behind the overextended UN forces. Fixing a front, encircling the defenders, assaultin unprepared positions from the rear, the idea behind strong guerilla warfare, practiced by well-led, resolute veteran foot soldiers. A textbook, one we had yet to study.
