If the 60 mm mortars were the artillery
of the Infantry Platoon, rifle grenades were the
artillery of the individual soldier. When properly
trained in their use, a soldier could fire them while
hidden in just a wrinkle of ground, effectively from
defilade, and destroy dug-in enemy and their machine
guns, and even unsuspecting armor.
Our Korean War infantry were largely
draftees, without sufficient training to become experts
in deployment of rifle grenades of any type, so this
deadly little defense was unfortunately
underutilized.
