In the early fighting, when
ROK wounded could be
evacuated at all, it was usually by train.
Later, many lives were saved in
Korea by prompt medical attention and quick
evacuation by air from the immediate combat areas
themselves. The mountainous terrain would have made
removing wounded by vehicle both slow and painful,
resulting in many more deaths. In this photo, the
scout from 3rd Battalion, 23rd Inf. Regt, 2nd Inf.
Div, was wounded while on a patrol, but receives
prompt medical attention from a medic. In the rear
another soldier helps a ROK, also wounded but still
grasping his rifle. Both were evacuated by
helicopter.
